Best New Burgers: Très Magnifique Burgers At Two LA French Spots
By now, you’re probably aware that COVID has wreaked havoc on the LA dining scene, and caused restaurants to make a number of pivots in recent months. Many are offering outdoor dining and takeout for the first time. Pop-ups are plentiful. An all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ spot transformed itself into a sidewalk fried chicken shack.
So a couple of French restaurants adding burgers to their menus might not seem like a huge deal - after all, we’ve already got the Big Mec. But when they’re as great as the new burgers at Loupiotte Kitchen and Marvin, that’s when it becomes breaking news.
The two burgers couldn’t be more different. The one from Loupiotte, a tiny sidewalk cafe in Los Feliz, has all the decadent extras you’d expect on a menu that features French onion soup, Croque-Monsieurs, and creamy polenta topped with a deep-fried egg. The thick, ground-chuck patty comes medium-rare, extremely juicy, and topped with a blanket of melted Gruyère. It’s served with a sweet confit d’oignon, heirloom tomatoes, and crisp arugula to balance it all out. If you like messy burgers, or need a break from the recent smashburger trend, this one will give you your fix and then some.
The burgers at Marvin, on the other hand, are not quite as fussy, but just as good. Before the pandemic hit, this Weho spot was an upscale restaurant serving jamon toast Bolognese made with truffles, and only open for dinner. But now, they’ve also launched Marvito, their casual lunchtime alias, serving sandwiches, salads, tacos, and the burgers. They’ve got four on the menu, but your number-one draft pick is the California Burger. The two smashed patties are topped with red onion, avocado, mayo, lettuce, and Jack cheese, and it’s a clean-tasting, crisp masterpiece. We should also add that if you’re not in the mood for a burger (or just want a double-lunch), the cole-slaw-and-pickle-laden fried chicken sandwich is an incredible substitute.
Needless to say, these are two burgers you need to eat - that’s why they’re our most recent additions to the Best New Burgers In LA. And if you know about a new burger in LA that we missed, don’t be afraid to politely shout at us on social media, and it just might be the next new burger we feature.
